Step Into the Circle: Writers in Modern Appalachia

My work focuses on intimate storytelling through environmental portraiture, and it explores environmental justice issues, as well as the ways in which art is used to strengthen communities.
A story I photographed, which investigated the effects of climate change on coastal Black communities was named as an Editor’s Pick by The Post and Courier. It was funded by the Pulitzer Center for Crisis Reporting, and it was also selected as a 2022 Staff Favorite by the Pulitzer Center.
My ongoing portrait series featuring creatives around the Southeast is published monthly in print and online with Walter Magazine, O. Henry, Pinestraw,
and Southpark Magazine.
My work has appeared in the Knoxville Museum of Art, Garden and Gun, Walter Magazine, Our State, and has been featured in galleries in Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia.
I am currently enrolled in the M.A. program at the UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media where I was the recipient of the Tom Wicker Award.

I took that camera with me on my first airplane ride and when I landed in California I took roll after roll of the Golden Gate Bridge, seals, the Disney store, pigeons, and anything that moved me.
I remember opening the prints from Half-Hour Photo and seeing all of my visions on long, panoramic paper. I was enchanted.
Now, almost 25 years later I've cultivated that natural curiosity through study and lots of practice. Although I will always be a lifelong student of photography, I'm excited to offer my creative take on what photos can be.
I've been taking photos since my parents bought me a panoramic camera in fifth grade.
