Dear Birthday girl,

A year ago we blew up our lives and initiated some huge changes. We spent the last year cleaning, organizing, selling, donating, and rearranging all of our worldly possessions in preparation for a move that reduced our living space by more than half. The other day I picked up a pile of books and you asked whether we were selling them or giving them away. I was just moving them across the room to the bookshelf, but it made me realize how scary and confusing things may have been for you this year. You are resilient and forgiving, but I’ve worried constantly about whether we’ve traumatized you. And yet, here I am a year later looking back on these film scans (because I haven’t even touched more than a handful of digital photos I’ve taken over this last year) and realizing we’ve had a lot of beautiful moments in between the chaos and uncertainty. Happy birthday my little Juniper. My tiny Dodo. My sweet little chicken.

All of our family photos below were taken with either a Canon ae-1 Program, Yashica Mat 124g, or a disposable black and white camera and processed/scanned by the best photo lab out there, Richard Photo Lab.

that second carousel image, I don’t think I have ever seen a sweeter portrayal of parental love, both in the image content as well as in the placement and care of its creation.
